Artist Studio in the Desert

Sandwiched between the Saguaro National Park and the Tohono O’Odham Reservation this small residential addition is secluded away from the city center of Tucson and deeply embedded in the desert landscape. Two enclosed spaces, a workshop and artist studio, float over the desert flood plain on a raised platform which also houses several seating areas, an outdoor shower, and a dining area enclosed in a steel screen.

Involved with design from inception, I took over project management at the end of the construction documents phase and finished the project through bidding, permitting, and construction administration.

Bedroom in the Garden

This addition and renovation focuses on a new master suite in its own private landscape. High clerestory windows help naturally light the space while maintaining privacy from the back yard. Challenges included interfacing the new construction with the existing, nearly century old, adobe.

Having assisted with the construction documentation I took over project management responsibilities during construction administration.

This addition and renovation project adds a new detached garage and a pair of bedrooms to an existing home on a long narrow lot typical of spanish colonial Albuquerque. The new bedroom wing wraps itself around existing trees and opens the shared living space up to the light of the back yard.

I assisted in the construction administration of this project.

Kitchen Renovation

The existing kitchen was low and dark. In order to raise the ceiling and add new clerestory windows a continuous concrete bond beam was required to support the new weight on the existing terrone walls.

Bosque Oassis

This project consisted of adding a pool, ipe hardwood deck, shade structure, and fire pit to an existing yard.

Although the project was already underway when I was brought on board I assisted in construction administration, particularly in designing and generating drawings for the fire pit which was added after the rest of the project was under construction.

The replacement of an existing carport which was in bad repair gave the opportunity to add a small exterior storage area to this existing house.

As the owner’s representative to the city I successfully advocated for a variance (taking a small sliver out of the setback to allow space for the new storage area) in addition to designing and managing the project from start to finish.
